I just got a C on an English writing test, one where I had to respond to a given prompt. I'm in ninth grade. This test has made me reconsider my writing style and ability.

Think of your writing as a river. Your story is the water and anything extra that doesn't absolutely NEED to be there to further(such as extra detail and flowery purple prose language) the story is pollution. People do not want to swim (read) in a polluted river (your story bogged down with unnecesary detail).
It's okay to write simple. Sometimes less is more and you can still make it "beautiful."
Also, some advice: Tests schmests. Really, don't worry about it.
I know it's hard to do. Trust me. I've been down that road. I want to be an author as well and pursue a career in writing. All the English classes I've ever taken, I have excelled at and teachers have always praised my work. And then I took the writing part of the ACT and got an embarrassingly low score. Yes, I was frustrated. I was upset and doubted my abilities, but that is the worst thing you can possibly do.
Never doubt yourself. (But don't get arrogant.) If you don't have confidence in your writing, no one will. Remember that.
I wish you good luck on future writing and I encourage you to pursue your dream, no matter what anybody says. If you want it bad enough, you'll find a way to get there and prove to everybody that tests aren't always right.
