With the correct parts will help you much, in not getting failures. But there will always be a chance of parts just not being compatible, to reasons beyond your control. One of the leading problems in computer building, from the old days to date, is memory compatibility. And will most likely be an issue for decades to come. Even ram on a manufactures list of "good" ram, can fail to be compatible. Most of the time though, if you keep with the standard speeds of ram, that the motherboard will support, you'll be ok though.
I have been successful with ASUS, GIGABYTE motherboards, G.Skill, Wintec, Mushkin, PNY ram sets, Always Western Digital hard drives. Graphics cards, there isn't a "better" between ATI and NVIDIA as far as quality cards, but you have to watch out for the "manufactures". I always stick with ASUS, GIGABYTE, or MSI graphics cards. EVGA, and XFX makes great cards too, but watch out for the lower class cards BFGtech, power color and Diamond tech. Those cards seem to have more problems than most manufactures. Also try to avoid "reference" cards, cards that have no casing around the fan. These cards just blow the hot air around in your case, not out the back of your case...
The next thing is, planning your build. Watch video's on youtube about building. This will get you an idea of what and how you want to do things when you have your parts in front of you. The worst thing is to get your parts all layed out and started installing and have to take something back out because you forgot something. Double handling increases the chance of failure of parts, more chances for the hardware to get static charged.
Thirdly, when building, but all your parts from a reputible store, such as newegg.com or tigerdirect. That way if you have any problems with the parts, they will take them back no questions asked.
