I use size 75/11 sharp needle, rather than an embroidery needle. And, I change the needle very often so it's always sharp. Make sure you're using 40 weight embroidery thread for the needle, and either 40 or 60 weight thread for the bobbin. And, make certain the pressure foot is UP when you thread the machine. If it's down, the tension discs inside don't always catch the thread properly.
