1. Begging makes you look absolutely desperate.

Begging is usually the absolutely final thing you can think of when you are trying to save your relationship. You have tried to meet, tried talking, tried phoning, tried texting, tried talking to their friends, but whatever you do, nothing seems to be working.

Where to Go for Help after a Handbag Fling

Several new online services have sprung up specifically to cater to sellers of used "it" bags—particularly, women who want to extricate themselves from a relationship with an expensive pocketbook and recoup some of the purchase price as efficiently as possible. In the down economy, there's more demand for used high-end purses from labels like Chanel, Hermès and Louis Vuitton—leading to more competition for suppliers. These sites bring buyers and sellers of pre-owned designer bags together, making the transaction as hassle-free as possible for both.

Some sites resell used purses on consignment; others offer to buy your used purse outright. Either way, first the seller uploads a few digital photos, so experts at the site can evaluate the merchandise. If they accept it, the next step is to ship them the bag. The sites say because they check their inventory, they offer used-handbag shoppers an important advantage over bidding on eBay—protection against knockoffs.

The sites say they refuse to resell counterfeit merchandise and will refund any purchase that turns out to be a fake.

Handbag makers, it's worth noting, make no such guarantees about the sites. "We are not currently working with any of these Web sites," says a spokesman for Bottega Veneta, the luxury brand owned by PPR SA's Gucci Group whose bags have sold on the sites. As for the authenticity of bags sold there, he says, "I couldn't tell you."

Some of the styles these sites are selling have been out of stores for years. Still, they typically cost 50% less than what new styles from the same designer label would cost at a full-price department store. Of course, an in-demand style may sell at a much higher price, and unpopular styles might go for much less.

Sarah Davis, founder of Fashionphile LLC, an online retailer based in Beverly Hills, Calif., says business is up more than 65% this year, with the company selling an expected 10,000 pre-owned bags in 2010 compared with 6,000 in 2009.

Shoppers on the site are really into the merchandise: Ms. Davis says a 2007 survey of the Web site's customers found 10% who said they buy 10 or more brand-new luxury bags a year, and 7% who said they buy only pre-owned bags. Those numbers may have softened in a softer economy. But on the other hand, many women have been willing to overlook a few light scratches, Ms. Davis says.

We tested four of the designer handbag Web sites, offering up three Gucci purses and one Christian Dior handbag that we hadn't worn in years. We found there were certain conditions to be met before we got the chance to recoup some of our designer-handbag expenditures.

The sites we tested take bags from only about a dozen luxury brands, including Chanel, Hermès and Louis Vuitton, only those that are in good condition and in most cases only those purchased for an original retail price of $1,000 or more.

Consigning the bags would have been easier if I'd kept the dust bags—all of the resellers inquired about them. And while the $435 earned wasn't enough for a new designer bag, the extra room in the back of our closet was reward enough. Not all of the bags we wanted to sell made the cut, though.

Fashionphile and Yoogi's Closet Inc., based in Seattle, offer to buy the handbags outright. They sent us checks after receiving our bags. Covet Shop Inc. and Strictly Pursonal Ltd. required that we consign our bags, offering to send us 50% to 70% of the final sale price, when and if the bags sold.

We offered a Gucci Horsebit Chain Shoulder clutch, purchased in a department store in 2003 for about $1,000, to Fashionphile. A form guided us through the process. We attached pictures and got an email response the same day. The company offered us an immediate $225 for the bag—$54 less than we would get if chosing the less-certain consignment route. Fashionphile pays sellers about 70% of the average final selling price of comparable styles, determined from its database, Ms. Davis says.

We printed out the contract, signed it and put it in with the shipment of the purse. A week later we got an email confirming that our bag had arrived, and our check came in the mail a week later.

Another Gucci bag went to Covet Shop, a New York company that also sells pre-owned designer apparel and shoes. Covet Shop offers only a consignment option, paying 50% of the selling price. We submitted photos of two Gucci bags and were asked to consign one of them the same day. The bag was an older model we'd bought for about $350 on a trip abroad. We shipped it along with a signed printout of the contract they'd emailed.

A week later Covet Shop sent an email saying the bag was more worn than expected and wouldn't be accepted after all. Our photos didn't show the wear, and we'd neglected to mention a tear near the handle and some peeling leather on the front. It took three days and two emails to find out when to expect my bag back. Nancy Chuang, the site's co-founder, dropped it off at my apartment five blocks from her company (normal response time is one day, she says).

We offered a Gucci Bamboo Bullet bag purchased in 2004 for about $1,200 to Strictly Pursonal, a Queens Village, N.Y.-based site. Response time after photo submission was less than an hour.

Company owner Michele Rosenthal told us the style we had was unpopular and would take a while to sell, but we'll get $325 if it sells for $599. Five weeks later, it's still up on the site. Ms. Rosenthal says this style might take a year to sell.

Lastly, we sent photos of our Christian Dior Street Chic Columbus bag to Yoogi's Closet. We'd purchased it in 2002 for about $1,300 and were eager to say good-bye to it. After receiving our photos, Yoogi said it would purchase it for $190 to $230. We signed the contract, sent the bag—and got our final offer of $210. The company pays 50% to 70% of the expected selling price, says Simon Han, the site's co-founder, who says he receives 100 bags a week.
