How can I tatter and shred fabric to "age" my gory Halloween costume?
I'm making a cape from satin and it needs to look old and tattered and have a ragged edge and a few holes here and there. I want the edges to look similar to the edges of Emily's dress/veil from The Corpse Bride.
I want it to look like I've been murdered and my cape is old--so I don't want that cutsey "cut out" look like you see on pre-made costumes in stores. I want it to look creepy and old!
Use a lighter or a lit insense and burn the edges with the ligthter, and put small holes close together with the insense then rip it. It looks more natural than poking a hole in it and then ripping it. Just make sure you are careful not to light the whole thing on fire. and do it on a flat cool surface that is hard and nonflamable.
Also wash it several times to get the newness out of it.
