Scroll Keepsake

A Tankard is a historic drinking vessel usually to carry alcoholic beverages such as beer and ale, and was widely used in northern Europe (especially Scandinavia, Germany, and the British Isles). Also used in colonial America from the second half of the 16th century until the end of the 18th century.

The body was usually cylindrical, with a hinged lid, with or without ornate finial, generally a thumb piece, and a handle that is often in a scroll shape. On the handles of many 17th- and 18th-century tankards were whistles that were used for summoning waiters.

Though they were sometimes made of horn, carved ivory, pottery, and porcelain (with metal mounts), tankards most often were made from precious metals especially silver, and pewter. Larger tankards were used in the late 17th century certain commissioned by corporate bodies or guilds for presentation or ceremonial use. Reproductions of traditional tankard styles date from the 19th century and continue to be produced in the 20th century.

Home Décor – Shabby Chic Decorating Ideas for the Kitchen to Use Today!

Are you looking for shabby chic decorating ideas to use in your kitchen? Here are several easy and fun ideas that I have personally used to incorporate shabby chic decorating in that all-important room of the house—the kitchen.

Start by taking an inventory of keepsakes and newer knick knacks that you like and could be used as shabby chic home décor in the kitchen. Keepsakes that I used in my shabby chic kitchen were an old wooden recipe box, vintage measuring spoons, old tin cookie cutters, a miniature iron, an antique compact, a ceramic rose-design dish with lid and serving spoon, a vintage tea set and a couple of small photos in antique frames.

Decide where you will display your items. I used a tall, wrought iron corner shelf with four shelves to display the above items. On each shelf I draped a small lace doily that hung over the edge of the shelf. What I liked best about this collection was that it was tucked into a corner and out of the flow of traffic, and at the same time it was very attractive. It was a wonderful way to display keepsakes instead of having them packed away in a box.

Shabby chic home décor such as vintage bowls, trays and vases can be displayed on countertops and then brought to life by actually using them. Your family and guests will enjoy the uniqueness of their past and also their present beauty. For most family holiday dinners I bring out the family heirloom serving bowls and trays. What a great way to remember those good ‘ole days!

Kitchen curtains are an excellent way to add that shabby chic look with a unique twist. In place of the traditional café curtains, use a valance scarf made out of beautiful shabby chic cotton. Instead of the usual valance scarf draping over a rod use a scroll-type hook, drape the scarf as usual over the hooks and then thread the scarf through each hook from the back to create a “puffy circular” look to each corner of the window. This is very attractive and unique plus holds the scarf in place. The sides of the scarf hang about half-way down the window for added interest.

A wrought iron chandelier with a distressed finish is a great shabby chic home decor addition over the dining table in the kitchen. It adds flair to the shabby chic décor without being too formal.

Remember, shabby chic decorating can be used in any room of the house. Let your imagination and ingenuity flow to create a beautiful and unique shabby chic look to your home.

Memory/Keepsake box ideas?

I'm making a memory/keepsake box for my husband for Christmas (if I can wait that long to give it to him)...it will be filled with little things I have collected over the years, notes, a few pictures, etc.

I'm looking for some interesting packaging ideas for notes and such, I'm thinking tiny scrolls tied with string, and itty bitty envelopes. Any other ideas?

Anything at all will be helpful. Thank you!

Scrolls Always look so cute!

You could also fold some letters in interesting ways :

You could String together some notes Or glue to make an Accordion card.

This link has instructions on how to make different Japanese, Designer & handmade envelops - just scroll down to the lower half of the page :

How about printing a few of them out in different calligraphic fonts & cutting into bookmarks [if your husband loves to read, he will always have a 'note' bookmark at hand. And decorate it any way you like. Or cut the bookmark in any shape - the outline can represent things your husband likes.

You can also glue 2 same-sized notes back-to-back [or have a slightly larger colored sheet between them, such that it's edges form a border], laminate & these can be used as coasters on his work table.

Although this link has tuts & templates for pop-up cards, I just Adore the patterns & style that Robert Sabuda has used - some are So Elegant. You may be tempted to make & add one to your memory box ?

Also, here are a couple of different ways to make your memory box too :

Instead of string, you can weave narrow friendship bracelet-type strips in his favorite colors.
Or you could use some of his [or your] fav old clothing, ties, t shirts... - cut strips neatly & sew if required, into strings. These will add their own memories too.

Hope these inspire too
Have fun :-)
