The friend whose party it is does not have many Spanish friends, though her family will be there, I won't have to feel out of place because I am definitely not Spanish. All the same, I want to know what's going on. All I really know is that it's to celebrate a girl's 15th birthday (the transition from girl to woman), the whole flats to heels things, and that it's relatively formal. Anything else that you think I should know, so I won't feel clueless or out of place at the party, would be great(:
Also, how formal should my dress be, relatively? Like, floral cotton maxi, or satin solid color? And what about gifts? Is there anything different about that, what sort of gifts are usually given?

Hi, quinceanera is a very important party for the girl. Normally is a formal diner, but that can vary depending on the taste of the family. Also the young girls are not expected to be very formal.
In this kind of party usually the quincianera will dance a waltz with her partner ('chambelan' in spanish), he is a friend or relative of his age or a few years older. Or maybe she will have 15 'chambelanes' and will dance with all of them. This dance can go from a very simple waltz in pair, to a hole performance with lights and smoke, and also with another kind of music.
Also she will dance with her father and with her good father. One of them will say a speech, about how the girl is transforming in to a woman. In this stage the mother of the girl may broke in tears.
And then every body dance, like any party. For the gift, any thing for the quincianera will be fine, since music or books that you know she may like, to items such as bags, purse, perfume. It is not expected to be something fancy nor expensive.
