Sometimes we only appreciate what we have when our partner is no more. If you have had a wonderful and memorable relationship, you definitely know that losing a partner to death is like losing a part of your soul.
I want to share an experience garnered at a 70th birthday celebration recently. The celebrant has five lovely children, all happily married but they all reside abroad, his beloved wife died about fifteen years ago. The week he turned 70, they all called on phone expressing apologies why they may not be able to come home for his birthday but promised to make it up to him. The exact day he turned 70 was a Saturday and he was full of tears, shock and emotion laden. Why?
He went into reminiscence. He remembered the way he dated his wife, the fond memories they shared together, their dreams and aspirations over the children, how they planned to live their old age which never came to be. He remembered how his late wife made him feel and how she showered him with undying love. How she dotted over the children, showered them love without sidelining his own personal feelings as the husband. He went on and on into his past and tears fell freely unto his face.
Indeed he cried because he wished he could turn back the hands of the clock, whished he could have her right beside him to remind him of the memories he may have forgotten and make his day complete. We all know that, certain facts about life cannot be changed. She is long gone but the legacy she left behind remains strong and that is the bond within the family, undiluted and uniting love.
Why was he in shock on his supposed birthday? Two weeks to the event, the children in diasporas organized a surprised birthday, They engaged friends and families to secrecy, planned all activities through them, invited all their father's friends and associates and made his best friend coordinate all activities while they plan their trips home. Meanwhile, they kept calling their father, making all excuses that will prevent them from honoring him on this special occasion. At the same time, plans were in top gear to make the birthday a remarkable one.
On the D-day, the celebrants best friend who had been pressuring him to attend a function with him instead of staying back at home to brood over his children not coming home, showed up and encourage him to attend this special function with him. The celebrant obliged reluctantly. On getting to the venue, he was amazed at the esthetics and décor, he imagine the celebrant to be one top celebrity in view of the entire splendor. The moment he stepped into the hall, his world stood still. Lo and behold, all his children lined the walk way to usher him in. All guests stood up to usher him in with beautiful birthday songs rendering the air. He was dumbfounded, became tongue twisted and shed tears of joy. The first statement he could utter was 'I am a fulfilled man'.
He gathered himself together and narrated his journey so far in love with his late wife as earlier described which culminated into the kind of children he has. The love to keep the children as one family with him led him to a decision not to remarry after his late wife's death. To him, she was simply his jewel of inestimable value.
How emotional we all can be when we have good memories to live with. I am sure within our minds; this would send us into our different worlds. For those whose marriages are far from being happy, you can still make it happen, do not wait till your spouse is dead and live in regrets of what you could have changed.
For me, there is joy in love; there is joy in loving and joy in being loved in return. I want to look back in my later years and smile, be happy that I have had a loved filled life. I want to be able to come up one day and celebrate love and what love has done to me. I want to be fulfilled in love. Wouldn't you rather celebrate love than live in regrets and unhappiness?

Poll: What to wear to a funeral for a friend...?
...this IS a serious Q. My good friend will be buried tomorrow. His family is poor and the family members likely don't have suits & ties. I have a suit that I keep for funerals (black). Should I wear it? Or "dress down"? I don't want to look like an usher, you know? Yet I don't want to offend by doing so.

This is the simplest solution: Just wear the suit to begin with. After you arrive, observe other people shuffling in. If any/some are wearing suits, keep yours on. If everyone seems dressed down/more casual, then just remove your jacket and tie, leave them in the car, and you will still be wearing a nice shirt and slacks.
Honestly, though - none of it matters as much as most people think. I have unfortunately been to many funerals, and everyone has always dressed very differently at every funeral. From jeans/t-shirt to suits and dresses and everything in between. Once you're there, the emotions are running too high for anyone to care what anyone else is wearing.
