Philanthropists started to run schools for the poor, these were often called "Ragged Schools" but religious based "Sunday Schools" were also important though the education they gave was limited and indeed mucvh of education in the whole of the victorian period was as much anout "Moral Improvement" as it was about the learning of facts and skills. At the zenith of the movement, there were 192 Schools, with an average attendance of 20,000 pupils.
